Sources of Irrigation
The Sources of Irrigation resource provides district level data on the area irrigated through different irrigation sources in India for selected agricultural years. The dataset categorizes irrigated area by irrigation type, area classification, and sub-classification, allowing users to distinguish between various sources such as canals, wells, and other irrigation systems. It includes standardized geographic identifiers to support regional and temporal comparisons. The data is compiled under the Land Use Statistics framework and made available through the Grand Query Reports system. This resource supports analysis of irrigation infrastructure and water use patterns across regions.

| Data insights | The Sources of Irrigation dataset enables analysis of the relative contribution of different irrigation sources across districts and states. It helps identify regions dependent on specific irrigation systems and assess changes in irrigation practices over time. Policymakers can use this data to guide investments in irrigation infrastructure, groundwater management, and water conservation initiatives. Researchers can examine links between irrigation sources, cropping patterns, and agricultural productivity. The Sources of Irrigation dataset also supports evaluation of regional disparities in access to irrigation facilities. |

| Methodology | The Land Use Statistics data are compiled from official secondary sources, like annual administrative land records maintained at the village level by revenue under the nine fold land classification system which includes categories such as forests, non-agricultural land, fallow land, net sown area, cropped area, etc. The classification and utilization metrics are aggregated up to district or state levels and published periodically by DES. It’s likely supplemented by remote sensing or survey inputs in some sub-domains, though the primary data comes from official land records and administrative returns. |
