The Place of Occurrence of Accidental Deaths
The Place of Occurrence of Accidental Deaths dataset, published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) as part of its Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) reports, provides a detailed account of where accidental deaths occur across India. The Place of Occurrence of Accidental Deaths dataset categorizes fatalities by the location or setting in which the accident took place such as residential premises, roads, workplaces, farms, public spaces, or other specified areas along with state and year wise distribution.

| Data insights | The Place of Occurrence of Accidental Deaths dataset sheds light on the environments and settings where accidental deaths are most prevalent, offering essential insights for understanding context-specific risk factors and designing targeted safety interventions. By categorizing fatalities by location—such as residential areas, workplaces, roads, farms, public spaces, and other sites, this dataset enables researchers to analyze how environmental, occupational, and infrastructural factors influence the occurrence of accidents. Patterns in the data often reveal that roadways and transport-related environments account for a substantial proportion of accidental deaths, reflecting issues like traffic density, unsafe driving practices, and inadequate road safety infrastructure. Workplaces and farms show higher accident risks associated with machinery, electrical hazards, and manual labor, while residential locations may see fatalities linked to fire, electrocution, or falls. Regional variations across states and years provide further understanding of how local living conditions, industrial development, and enforcement of safety norms affect the spatial distribution of accidents. From a policy and planning perspective, The Place of Occurrence of Accidental Deaths dataset supports efforts to strengthen occupational safety laws, urban safety design, home safety campaigns, and transportation management systems. It offers a vital evidence base for improving public infrastructure, housing safety standards, and community awareness, ultimately reducing the risk of accidental deaths across diverse environments in India. |

| Methodology | The Accidental Deaths data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is sourced primarily from police records, based on First Information Reports (FIRs) and related investigations of accidental deaths registered across all police stations in India. Each case of accidental death whether due to natural causes, transport accidents, fire, drowning, or other circumstances is documented under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or Special and Local Laws (SLLs) and submitted by state and union territory police departments to the NCRB. The NCRB employs a standardized reporting framework to ensure uniformity in data collection nationwide. District Crime Record Bureaus (DCRBs) and State Crime Record Bureaus (SCRBs) collate information from local police stations using prescribed formats that capture details such as age, gender, cause and type of accident, place of occurrence, and victim occupation or demographic group. The consolidated state-level data are then transmitted to the NCRB headquarters, where they are verified, aggregated, and analyzed for publication in the annual Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) report. |
